According to recent reports, Apple is planning to release its newest Apple TV set-top box at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference this June. Rumors of the next generation Apple TV have persisted for years as Apple has wanted to improve the television viewing experience. This version of the technology will feature both Siri and support for a native App Store, and will be a significant overhaul.
Although the price was cut to $69 earlier this year, it has not been updated since 2012. This update will possibly coincide nicely with its announcement of its own oft-rumored streaming TV service. Apple recently announced that it will bring HBO Now into its lineup exclusively next month. Now, it is rumored that the company will announce a web-based TV service with a lightweight package of about 25 channels, for between $30-$40 a month.
Besides the Siri voice integration and native App Store, the new Apple TV will provide developers with a new software development kit to write applications for the new hardware. It will also include the company’s latest A8 processor found in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, and will feature onboard storage that goes well beyond the 8 gigabytes found on the current hardware. The new A8 processor is powerful enough to output 4K resolution video, which means the new device could be capable of supporting ultra-high-definition content.
