Apple Stock News

Apple Inc. is scheduled to release Q3 earnings this afternoon after the closing bell.

To be precise, the company is expected to report adjusted earnings of $1.57 per share and  revenues of $44.89 billion in the June quarter, according to analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters. That’s a 10.7% jump in EPS and a 6% jump in revenue from this time last year.

However, at this point no matter what the performance for this spring was, investors will give it a pass as all eyes are on next quarter. Some analysts have gone as far as saying that they want to get this quarter over with and it makes sense as we are at the end of a product cycle. With the iPhone8 launch just around the corner and a lot of people waiting to upgrade their iPhone6, one of Apple’s best sellers, next quarter guidance seems much more relevant than anything the company has done so far this year.

Apple announced on July 18 that the company has appointed Isabel Ge Mahe, a China-born Wireless Technologies leader, as the vice president and managing director of Greater China. This move is in the hope of “deepening our team’s connections with customers, government and businesses in China to advance innovation and sustainability”, said Isabel.

The smartphone giant seems to be experiencing some trouble in China. Apple has been facing increasing competition from local players and more pressure from regulators. However, this newly created position shows the positive sign that Apple is on the right track toward winning back the market.

Isabel has led Apple’s wireless technology team for over nine years. According to Apple’s release, she has worked closely with R&D team and carrier partners in China to bring more customized features to the iPhone and iPad.

China still represents one of the most promising market to Apple. The fast-growing middle class stands as a large potential customer base. It is obvious to the naked eyes that Isabel is perfectly positioned for this new role. She would more than likely to be tasked to capture the second-largest economy.

Apple Stock News: New Data Centre and Renewed Positioning

Apple Stock News

For the latest Apple Stock News, AAPL closed at $149.05 per share on, July 14th, 2017. It generated a return of 0.87% from its previous close on July 13th, 2017, when it closed at $147.76 per share.

On July 13th, 2017, Apple announced that it has plans to build its first data center in China. This will be in partnership with a Chinese data management company. Thus making Apple join the ranks of other tech giants who have made similar moves, including Amazon, Microsoft, and IBM.

From a product functionality standpoint, this data centre and any future data centres are predicted to rapidly improve the various iOS services that are present with the iPhone.

This new data centre is expected to allow Apple to operate at a much more competitive level with local Chinese smartphone producers. These companies have generally offered smartphone products noticeably cheaper than Apple’s iPhone. Unfortunately, this phenomenon has cost Apple dearly in China.

It is therefore a strong signal that Apple is taking the appropriate and necessary steps to close the gap that exists between it and local players. Together, these measures are believed to become a positive boost to the sales and profitability of the American tech giant.

This past week, information on Apple’s latest prototype leaked from MobileFun. The website posted the first protective cases for the iPhone8.  As it had done already with its precursor, the iPhone7 and with the Galaxy S8, this revealed Apple’s main new features.

Apparently the new iPhone will include a larger than before display of 5.8 inches, a vertically aligned dual camera and no home button, which will be likely integrated as a touch element. A “cut-out” at the top of the display will include the front camera and sensors. These latest changes have the potential to radically transform the iOS 11 with a new “Function Area”. That could renovate the way users receive and interact with notifications.

Despite positive sales predictions whether these changes will turn into a success or not will depend on consumers’ willingness to pay the high listing price of at least $1,000. However, given Apple’s brand recognition and higher customer loyalty, Apple expects to repeat its success. Competitors may be offering more affordable options but consumer’s still seem willing to pay a premium for Apple products.

Beddit is a Finnish start-up that specializes in the analysis of sleep. They have developed a tool set to be placed on the mattress to analyse the quality of the sleep of its users. As the user sleeps, the tool collects data. So, why did Apple invest in such a product? Different hypothesis are circulating.

Firstly, Apple could be willing to develop its line of connected products related to health. But it could also be a way for the famous brand to integrate the technology of Beddit to its Apple iWatch. Competition on this market is tough. Among Apple’s opponents are Fitbit and Garmin.

The device created by Beddit is more advanced than any other sleep applications currently used by competitors of Apple. Thus, having the technology of this start-up could be beneficial in the long term for Apple. As we wrote in previous articles, Apple is a leader in the high-tech industry. Having the technology of Beddit could be a way for Apple to maintain its leadership.

Apple Stock News: iTunes On The Spotlight

Apple Stock News

For the latest Apple Stock News, AAPL closed at $141.83 on Monday, April 17, 2017. It had a gain of 0.55% from its previous close of $141.80 per share.

Apple Stock News

After a series of decline, Apple is looking to reverse this trend. Apple’s quarter earnings is projected to take place on May 2nd. Investors forecast a bright future for Apple as projects like the iPhone 8 and autonomous technologies for car are in progress. Moreover, Apple may be looking to make some changes and updates regarding iTunes.

iTunes might even change its name. This would also include internal changes of the functionality.  In the past two years, Apple has put a lot of effort in its communication to promote Apple Music in order to compete with Spotify -its direct opponent. However, this has had a negative impact on iTunes, which benefit from less attention. Thus, Apple might bring closer iTunes and Apple Music. This will lead to a central musical offer by Apple.

This choice could strengthen the presence of Apple in the streaming of music instead of music downloads. As comparison, in 2016, in the French market, musical downloads represented 33 millions while the musical streaming was equal to 143 million.

India is the second most populated country in the world with over 1.25 billion people.  Given such a population size, the market has a lot of potential for phone makers. According to emarketer, smartphone users in the country numbered 76 million, and is estimated to rise to 317 million. That is over 400% growth in 6 years.

Although Apple has been facing difficulty conducting business due to India’s restrictions to foreign companies.   One such clause, is foreign companies looking to open retail stores in India, must source at least 30% of the products from Indian manufacturers.  However, it seems India may give Apple an exemption due to the company regarded as “cutting-edge technology”.

Apple currently opened over 100 shops under the franchise mode as part of a pilot phase before plans for expansion.  As India increases its purchasing power and the country’s middle class is growing, Apple’s potential in the country could be a rewarding strategy.

Britain’s decision in June 2016 to exit the E.U., surprised the world.  In a move called, Brexit, the people face a new future for the United Kingdom (UK).  This future will bring changes, and changes will have its effect in the economy.  Leaving the E.U. and its single market would leave the UK facing more restrictions with trading among its biggest trading partner, countries within the E.U.  As a result, the British pound devalued by approx. 18.5%.

Perhaps inevitably, because the currency decreased, Apple increased its price in the App store by approx. 25% for the UK.  As unpopular as this decision may be for Apple users in the UK, Apple needs to do this.   Apple released an e-mail detailing, “when foreign exchange rates or taxation changes, [Apple] sometimes need to update prices on the App Store”.  Investors will be anxious to see how this decision will effect future revenue as a result of the price increase.

Apple Stock News: Investing in Research and Development

Apple Stock News

For the latest Apple Stock News, AAPL closed at $113.72 on Friday, October 28th, with a 0.66% loss, or $0.76 from its previous close of $114.48 per share.

Apple stock continues its downward trend after posting a disappointing fourth quarter report on October 25th.  Recently, Apple unveiled the new Macbook Pro in its much anticipated event on October 27th.  However, the event’s anticipation failed to impress shareholders and Apple users.

Apple Stock News

Given these unflattering news, some question Apple’s high research and development (R&D) budget and its return on investment.  Apple spends over $10 billion or 5% of its trailing revenue on R&D.  The company spends about 43% of the companies listed on the S&P 500, according to the Wall Street Journal.  However, if one were to compare Apple with other high-tech companies, its R&D relative to trailing revenue is among the lowest.  For example, Facebook allocates over 20% of its trailing revenue to R&D.  Despite the iPhone’s success as its best selling product, Apple is focusing on diversifying its product.  One is by investing resources and time into its other products and ventures.  Although the new Macbook Pro failed to impress some, Apple plans increase its R&D budget in the future to improve its market share for its other products.

Although we are inclined to see the immediate gains, perhaps Apple’s decision is to focus on its long term goal.  Part of Apple’s long term goal is the completion of Apple’s new 176-acre headquarters dubbed, Campus 2.   The new headquarters will have a separate on-site R&D facilities.  Apple expects to complete construction and relocate over 12,000 employees by late 2016.
