With the release of the new iPhone XS and the more popular XS Max, Apple may be on the verge of it’s highest grossing iPhone release yet. Not to mention being days away from the release of the highly anticipated, and more affordable iPhone XR. In a recent survey by Piper Jaffray, from 700 domestic Apple iPhone owners, 39% would upgrade to the iPhone XS or XS Max if they were to upgrade this year with just about a split between the two models. The remaining 61% would choose the upcoming iPhone XR or existing iPhone 7 or 8.

Given that “older” apple products seem to not really survive that long. Wether that is by Apple’s own controversial, yet somehow forgivable doing, or people’s desire to have the next best thing, people are buying the newest phones. The in-house built A12 Bionic chip powered phone will cost the customer upwards 1000$, not to mention the increased warranties. People are now willing to pay top dollar for something that is highly utilized on a daily basis, and the reflection of the premium quality cellular phones will be seen in their sales. I believe that Apple’s business strategies are far more complex and exceed that which meet’s the eye. The release of the iPhone XR, which is a more affordable alternative to the only slightly more premium model, at still a fairly large price point, will surely become the most popular among the larger scale of consumer.  This could very well be their most profitable model to date.

Don’t Just “Watch” This Stock

The Series 4 Apple Watch has been seeing success across the board as well. It has been receiving notable reviews by consumers. The new Apple Watch Nike+ devices is the next release in the Series 4 family. It includes a larger screen, thinner body, an ECG reader, fall detection, and more. It will also launch worldwide.

Most of the time Apple stock falls after earnings. A lot of people with inflated expectations decide to sell after earnings. Instead, Apple tends to rise during the long periods between earnings reports. In 8 out of the last 10 iPhone releases, AAPL slid immediately after the release and didn’t return to pre-release levels for about 60 days. Currently, they’re hitting all time highs two weeks after the release. Last earnings report, on 07/31/18, sent AAPL into an immediate uptick. The first thing to be aware of, is understanding how powerful of a platform the professional sports world really is. At the core, viewers consist of a passionate, loyal fanbase that tune in almost every night. To get an idea, the average viewership of the finals of the 4 major sports in the US, which are football, basketball, baseball and hockey comes out to an astounding 40 million viewers. Now that the Supreme Court just granted states the permission to once again legalize gambling on sports matches, you can expect that number to rise just like the blood pressure of a die-hard fan or gambler during a close game. What happens now is the average person who normally wouldn’t care to watch a game at 8:00 on a Tuesday night when is favorite show is on, might be watching in hopes of getting a return on his bet.

What’s The Use?

Microsoft has been successful with bringing their tablet to the sideline of every NFL game. Today in the National Football League, you will constantly see players on the sidelines with these tablets in their hands, and the game they are playing is a little bigger than crushing candy. What they do is analyze the game through watching replays. How to improve in the game, on the spot. In the past they would be doing this only after the game was over or at halftime. That being on a big projector which only helped them when it may have been too late. This as opposed to seeing and breaking down the opponents game plan as well as their own shortcomings that can be improved, on the spot.

Apple’s first step into arenas came with the National Hockey League. Yes, it’s Apple on ice. Apple has their iPad and Mac in the hand of every coach to help improve in-game efficiency, similar to how NFL has utilized them. So the NHL was next in bringing these modernized coaching technique’s to the game, with Apple supplying the goods. Contrary to the games being played, this partnership leaves us with 2 winners.

It’s A Hit

Apple’s next move was bringing it’s iPad into every dugout in Major League Baseball. Being that the MLB has a way larger fan base that the previous inked deal, this one proves to be more lucrative. Besides for the players and coaches to increase efficiency, there is something for the fans as well. The At Bat app allows through AR (Augmented Reality) technology, fans to utilize their Apple device in game. They simply hold their device up to the player at bat to see all kinds of interesting stats. Statistics such as how hard their favorite player just hit the ball, or how fast he ran. This would be the first sighting of AR technology being instituted into a major sport. For a sport like baseball, I imagine a child seeing their favorite player with this Apple product in their hand makes a statement.

 

As for the NBA, I believe a deal with apple would have been very fitting. Similar to the NBA, Apple epitomizes style, swagger and influence. This is right in line with what the creator of Apple himself, Steve Jobs, envisioned and strived for the products to be. Although, in the realm of the National Basketball Association, Apple did recently ink a television deal with one of the NBA’s biggest stars in Kevin Durant. This is the company that made similar deals with the likes of Steven Spielberg and Jennifer Anniston. They signed the baller to be part of a new drama series that subsequently is called “Swagger”.

Apple also banked in on the World Cup craze, implementing all types of features on their devices through Siri. Fans got easy access and full information to things such as scores, schedules, rosters and all other types of information.

The Real Deal

Apple’s partnership with the sports world may be stronger than inking any official deals.. Some of the biggest marketers for Apple in sports, are the players themselves. These highly influential superstars are photographed as they walk in and out of stadiums. As they do so, a majority of these superstars are using none other than Apple products. Primarily Beats headphones or AirPods. Apple acquired Beats for 3 Billion in 2014. This applies to every sport. (Not including the NFL in which the players are banned to wear them being that Microsoft has a deal with the NFL.) This was especially the case in the biggest sports event on the planet, this years World Cup.  On the court and field, the athletes warming up for a contest are also usually always using Apple headphones to get in the zone before a game.

 

 

Lets not forget, this is a company that could reportedly buy every single professional sports team if it wanted to. Partnerships with leagues may no doubt be lucrative and necessary, but the place they strive most in the sports world is by the individual athletes themselves. The heroes of so many, wearing their product, on and off the field/court.  Apple has established themselves as THE brand. In an expected fashion, they continuously adapt, and innovate to make life for the user, and of course the company, better.

 

 

How Can I Win?

It is important to note that besides when a new Apple product comes out, people want it and they get it.

Apple Is Not Afraid of Taking Risks

Yes, there is some risk that a $329 iPad can cannibalize future sales of much more expensive iPad Pro models. However, companies who do not take risks are inept. The bright side of this new move is that Apple is betting it could increase its total addressable market by selling an affordable enterprise-level iPad. Apple now offers an enterprise-level tablet for less than $350.

Apple selling a budget tablet can help attract small/medium enterprise customers away from sub-$300 Windows 10 laptops, Chromebooks, and Android tablets. The A10 Fusion SoC-equipped $329 iPad 2018 can function like the premium iPad Pros (equipped with A10X SoC) in the office, on the road, and at home. The single-core processor compute performance of the A10X Fusion is just 14% faster than the A10 Fusion.

The 2018 iPad is compatible with the $99 ($89 for students/schools) Apple Pencil or other third-party brand of stylus. Furthermore, Apple has made new updates to its free iWork productivity suite to make it Pencil/stylus-compatible.  Apple might also extend the free 200GB iCloud storage to non-student users of the $329 iPad 2018. An improved iWork office suite coupled with free large cloud storage per user is an attractive proposition for small and large enterprise buyers.

The lower hardware margin on the 2018 iPad can be offset through sales of Apple Pencil and iTunes purchases. Some digital artists, employees, students, and teachers will eventually buy iOS apps/games, e-books, streaming TV/Music/movie subscriptions through their company or school-issued iPads.

Mobile Gamers Will Also Appreciate This Cheap iPad 

Many K-12/college students/teachers are gamers. They will certainly appreciate Apple’s use of the A10 Fusion SoC (System-on-Chip) on the $299 iPad 2018. The integrated 6-core PowerVR-based GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) n the A10 Fusion SoC is as good as Apple’s own integrated GPU for the A11 Bionic SoC.

Based on the Arena of Valor (Ultra Graphics Settings) test of Notebook Check, the A11 Bionic’s GPU is only 2% better than the PowerVR GPU of the A10. That’s a negligible difference. Due to its affordability, the iPad 2018 can become the best tablet for casual and hardcore mobile gamers.

The advent of console/PC-quality iOS games like Arena of Valor and Fortnite is boosting the mobile platform as the growth driver for video games. It makes perfect sense for Apple to sell a $299/$329 gaming tablet that can outperform Android tablets with Nvidia (NVDA) Tegra K1 GPUs. Keeping its number one status in global tablet shipments requires Apple to cater to mobile gamers.

Selling a budget iPad increases the number of iOS gamers. The more iOS gamers there are, the better it is for Apple’s 30% commission rate from iTunes App Store purchases.

Final Thoughts

Apple’s move to release a budget iPad that can be used for enterprise productivity and high-end mobile gaming is commendable. It is another good reason to stay long AAPL. The management of this company is ready to take risks which could lead to better long-term iPad sales.

Ives believes that the iPhone X product cycle can be the strongest iPhone product cycle to date.

KeyBanc Capital Markets also raised its rating for Apple shares. According to Andy Hargreaves, there will be a “strong high-end demand” for the newest iPhone, which will favor investors sentiment over at least the next few quarters. Furthermore, the KeyBanc analyst predicts a gross profit margin of 39.5% and $11.68 of earnings per share for the fiscal 2018.

Hence, as Hargreaves said, Apple is a franchise with subscription-like qualities and not a regular hardware business, which support the Company’s position in a strong range.

Apple announced on July 18 that the company has appointed Isabel Ge Mahe, a China-born Wireless Technologies leader, as the vice president and managing director of Greater China. This move is in the hope of “deepening our team’s connections with customers, government and businesses in China to advance innovation and sustainability”, said Isabel.

The smartphone giant seems to be experiencing some trouble in China. Apple has been facing increasing competition from local players and more pressure from regulators. However, this newly created position shows the positive sign that Apple is on the right track toward winning back the market.

Isabel has led Apple’s wireless technology team for over nine years. According to Apple’s release, she has worked closely with R&D team and carrier partners in China to bring more customized features to the iPhone and iPad.

China still represents one of the most promising market to Apple. The fast-growing middle class stands as a large potential customer base. It is obvious to the naked eyes that Isabel is perfectly positioned for this new role. She would more than likely to be tasked to capture the second-largest economy.

The reported investment for this new, state of the art building is of 6 billion Danish crowns ($921 million).

Apple has increased its eco-friendliness since the United States pulled out of the Paris Accords. They pledged to back the accords regardless of the government’s opinion and issued a $1 billion green bond.

Since the moment of the announcement until the markets closed, Apple’s stock steadily increased. They closed the trading session gaining 0.88 or 0.61%. Experts and investors appear to have faith in Apple’s stock, as there have been several articles expressing their confidence in the company. Citing both the investment for the Data Center and the coming release of the iPhone 8 as the main reason for optimism.  I Know First’s bullish forecast for Apple is in line with these authored predictions.
