Apple Stock News: The foldable iPhone is expected to feature a 7.8-inch foldable OLED display from Samsung with a new design where the color filter is integrated directly into the matrix. This will make the screen thinner, lighter, and more energy-efficient. The hinges will be supplied by Taiwan’s Shin Zu Shing and US-based Amphenol, both manufactured using 3D printing.
During durability testing (millions of folds), the mechanism reportedly produced noise, and due to imprecise manufacturing tolerances, there was a high defect rate, but these issues have already been resolved. The smartphone is also expected to get a 5.5-inch outer display, the A20 chip, the C2 modem, a Touch ID power button, two rear cameras, and a price tag of around $2,000. The device may be released under the name «iPhone Ultra».
Unpatchable Exploit
Researchers at Paradigm Shift have discovered an unpatchable BootROM vulnerability in Apple’s A12 and A13 chips, allowing permanent control over a device. The exploit, named usbliter8, works via the USB controller by sending specially crafted data packets at startup. This forces a hardware pointer in memory to move backward, enabling data to be written to restricted memory areas.
Devices with the A11 chip and newer (A14+) are safe. Exploiting the A12 is relatively easy, while the A13 is harder due to the Pointer Authentication Codes (PAC) feature, which researchers had to bypass in multiple stages. As a result, an attacker can downgrade security settings and boot unsigned software. The proof-of-concept (PoC) code has been published on ps.tc. The vulnerability does not affect the Secure Enclave directly, but creates new avenues for attacking it.
M7
Apple is accelerating the development of AI chips and changing their release schedule, Bloomberg reports. The release of the high-performance MacBook Ultra with an OLED display, previously expected by the end of 2026, is now unlikely due to the delay of the M7 Pro/Max chips. The M6 chip for entry-level Macs will be released this year, but the M6 Pro and M6 Max versions have been canceled. The next generation of Pro and Max chips (based on the M7) will only appear by the end of 2027.
The key focus is on the M7: these chips will get technologies for AI and demanding software. Their release has been moved to the first half of 2027. The M6 will get a new memory architecture, an upgraded Neural Engine, and up to 12 GPU cores. It will be used in the MacBook Pro, Mac mini, iMac, and new iPad models. The updated Mac Studio with the M5 Ultra chip (36 CPU / 80 GPU cores, up to 768GB of memory) is still expected this year.
